How Much Does It Cost to Start a 3D Printing Business?
Start an FDM print business for under $1,000 in equipment, and see how many sales it takes to break even.
What a starter FDM setup costs
FDM (filament) is the cheaper way in, and a current enclosed or open-frame printer from a major brand is enough to sell from. These are US prices reported in a pricing roundup, plus a typical street price for the A1 combo from a deal-tracking thread. They move with sales, so confirm before you buy.
| Item | Typical US price |
|---|---|
| Bambu Lab A1 mini | $299 |
| Bambu Lab A1 with AMS Lite (multi-color) | about $419 (typical street price) |
| Bambu Lab P1S (enclosed) | $399 to $699 |
| Bambu Lab P2S (enclosed) | $549 |
| Spare textured PEI build plate | $19 to $22 |
| PLA filament, per 1 kg spool | about $25 |
| PETG filament, per 1 kg spool | $20 to $23 |
A sensible first budget is one A1 with AMS Lite (about $419), five spools of PLA ($125), and a spare plate ($20). That adds up to $564. It’s a starting point, not a recommendation of one brand. Any printer you trust works the same in the math below.

What a starter resin setup costs
Resin printers cost about the same up front, but the setup around them is bigger. You need a way to wash and cure every print, plus gloves, isopropyl alcohol, and ventilation. As one example, the Anycubic Photon Mono M7 Pro is listed at $562 on sale ($769 regular), and adding a Wash & Cure 3 Plus starts at $159, so the pair comes to about $721 before any resin.
Resin itself usually runs $25 to $80 per liter depending on type, which I break down in How Much Does Resin 3D Printing Cost?. I haven’t put a price on ventilation or protective gear here because it varies too much by room and by what you already own. Price those yourself before you commit.
Costs that aren’t the printer
- Marketplace fees. On Etsy that’s a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing, with extra charges if a sale comes through Etsy’s offsite ads. The full breakdown is in How to Price 3D Prints for Selling, and the example below uses the same rates. Check Etsy’s fee page for what applies to you today.
- Failed prints. Every print farm and hobby shop loses some material to failures. Use your own rate, not a guess. How to calculate your failure rate shows how.
- Your time. Setup, removal, cleanup, packing, and customer messages. It’s the cost beginners leave out most often.
- Machine wear and electricity. Small per print, but real over a year. See the machine wear guide.
- Things I haven’t priced: business registration, taxes, insurance, shipping supplies, and workspace. They depend on where you live, so look them up locally.
A break-even example
Say you buy the $564 starter setup and sell a $25 item (total order, shipping ignored to keep it simple) on Etsy.
- Etsy fees: $0.20 listing + $1.625 transaction (6.5%) + $1.00 processing (3% + $0.25) = $2.825. You keep $22.175.
- Cost to make it: using the main calculator’s defaults (45 g of PLA at $22/kg, 3 hours 15 minutes, 120 W, $0.18/kWh, $0.10/hour machine wear, 8% failure buffer) plus 15 minutes of your time at $20/hour, the true cost comes to $6.94.
- Profit per sale: $22.175 − $6.94 = $15.23.
- Break-even: $564 ÷ $15.23 is about 37.0, so you need 38 sales before the equipment has paid for itself.
That example leaves out shipping, packaging, ads, and taxes, so treat 38 as the best case. Change the price, fees, or your hourly rate and the answer moves a lot.
Check your own numbers
Before you spend anything, run the math with your own inputs:
- Get your per-print cost from the 3D Printing Price Calculator. Turn on the advanced settings for failure rate, labor, and your marketplace, so the take-home figure includes fees.
- Divide your equipment budget by profit per sale to get a break-even count, like the example above.
- Ask whether you can realistically sell that many in the first few months. If not, start with the printer you already have or a cheaper one.
