How to Calculate Your 3D Printer's Failure Rate
The price calculator asks for a failure rate. Here's how to find your actual number instead of guessing at the default.
What counts as a failure
A failure here means the whole print is a loss, spaghetti, a detached corner, a layer shift that ruins the part. That's different from the small, routine waste every print has from purging and priming, which the filament cost calculator handles separately as a waste factor. Don't double-count the two: failure rate is about prints you throw away entirely.
How to actually measure it
Keep it simple. For the next 20–30 prints, log two things: whether the print finished successfully, and if not, what went wrong. A notes app or a scrap of paper taped to the printer works fine.

After a few weeks you'll have a real number specific to your printer, your filament, and your settings, far more useful than any default.

Ranges only, your printer, filament, and print complexity all shift these numbers. If you're consistently above your stage's range, that's a signal to troubleshoot rather than just raise the calculator's buffer.
Where failures usually come from
- First-layer adhesion is the single biggest cause by a wide margin. Bed cleanliness, leveling, and first-layer temperature account for most of it.
- Warping, especially on ABS, ASA, and large flat PETG parts. An enclosure and a brim both help.
- Layer shifts, usually belt tension or a motor issue, more common on printers pushed to high speeds.
- Wet filament, which causes inconsistent extrusion and popping. A dry box or filament dryer solves this for humid climates.
Why this number changes your true cost
The site's calculator applies your failure rate by dividing your subtotal, not adding a flat fee, because that's the accurate way to spread the cost of totally lost prints across the ones that actually finish. On a print with $1.21 in material, electricity, and machine wear:
