How to Reduce 3D Printing Costs

Most of the easy savings come from cutting waste and failed prints, not from squeezing pennies out of electricity.

Cut infill, not quality

Most functional prints don't need 100% infill. Dropping from a high infill percentage to something in the 15–25% range for non-structural parts saves real filament without a visible difference in most prints. Save higher infill for parts that actually need the strength.

Reduce failures before they happen

A failed print wastes both filament and machine time twice over. Keeping the nozzle clean, leveling the bed regularly, and using a brim or raft on prints prone to warping all cut into your failure rate, which is exactly the number that determines how much buffer you need to add to every successful print.

Buy filament in bulk when you print regularly

Multi-spool bundles and larger reels consistently price out lower per kilogram than single spools. If you're printing often enough that filament is a real recurring cost, buying in bulk is one of the simplest ways to lower your per-gram material cost without changing anything about how you print.

Print during off-peak hours if your rate plan allows it

If your utility offers time-of-use pricing, off-peak electricity can run substantially cheaper than peak rates. Since long prints are one of the few household loads you can freely schedule overnight, this is a low-effort way to shave a bit off the electricity line, though as covered in our electricity cost guide, that line was already small to begin with.

Batch similar prints

Printing several small parts on one plate uses the same bed-heating and startup overhead as printing one, spreading that fixed cost across more output. It also cuts down on the number of times you have to babysit a print start.

Maintain the printer itself

Worn nozzles under-extrude and cause failed prints; stretched belts cause layer shifting and the same result. A little routine maintenance protects both your failure rate and the printer's working life, which is exactly the depreciation cost this site's calculator asks you to account for.
