How it works

  1. Enter what you'll spend on each finishing category. Defaults are reasonable starting points, not exact prices, edit them to match your actual supplies.
  2. Add reference or fit-research time if it applies. Matching a specific character's proportions, or fitting armor to a real body, is real billable time on commission work. Leave it at zero for personal builds.

Worked example

A 5-part helmet build, one visor and four armor pieces, needs a pack of sandpaper ($8), a tube of filler for the seams ($7), three cans of filler primer for two to three coats ($27), two cans of paint for a two-tone scheme ($18), and one can of clear coat ($9). That's $69.00 in finishing supplies alone, before the print cost, or about $13.80 per part as a rough average.

Filler primer is the single line item most people underestimate. It's what buries the layer lines that give a print away, and getting a smooth, paintable surface usually takes two to three coats with a light sanding pass between each one, not one quick spray.

What's "filler primer" and why does it matter so much?

It's a high-build spray primer that fills shallow surface defects, like layer lines, as it dries, so you can sand back to a smooth, level surface without removing part material. It's the standard route for cosplay props and any part where the final look matters more than dimensional accuracy.

How many coats of primer do I actually need?

Two to three coats is standard, sanding lightly between each one and checking under raking light for remaining lines. Rougher prints or larger surfaces may need an extra cycle.

Does this apply to resin prints too?

Yes, though resin prints start smoother and typically need less aggressive sanding, often starting around 400-grit instead of the 120-grit starting point common for FDM prints.
