Is 3D Printing Cheaper Than Buying?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what you're comparing it to.

Where printing usually wins

For a one-off custom part, a replacement clip that's been discontinued, a bracket sized to your exact space, a small design nobody sells, 3D printing is often the only reasonably priced option at all. There's no retail alternative to compare against, and the true cost of most small prints (a few dollars, per the breakdown in our cost guide) is usually far less than a custom-fabricated part from a machine shop or a specialty online seller.

Where buying usually wins

For anything mass-produced, an injection-molded plastic item you could buy off a shelf, 3D printing rarely competes on price. Injection molding is dramatically cheaper per unit once you're producing more than a handful of identical parts; the tooling cost is high, but it's spread across thousands or millions of units. A single FDM print doesn't get that economy of scale, so a generic plastic hook or container is almost always cheaper to buy than to print.

The printer itself is a cost, too

If you already own a 3D printer, the electricity and machine-wear portion of any given print is small, as shown throughout this site. If you're weighing whether to buy a printer specifically to make one part cheaper than buying it, the printer's own purchase price needs to be part of that comparison. That math only works out if you'll use the printer for more than just the one part.
